On November 13, the Forestry Training Centre Inc. (FTCI) of the Guyana Forestry Commission implemented the Timber Products Identification and Metrication Training at the Yarrowkabra Training Centre.
Funded by the European Union through IICA Guyana, this training was developed in response to requests from FLEGT-supporting export regulatory agencies to strengthen key gaps identified in their operations.
Participants from the Guyana_Revenue_Authority, the Guyana Wildlife Conservation and Management Commission, the EPA – Guyana, and the National Plant Protection Organisation were equipped with both theoretical and hands-on knowledge to accurately identify timber products linked to export documentation, understand metrication processes and procedures, and improve overall compliance in Guyana’s timber export system.
The session draws from core elements of the Guyana Timber Grading Rules for Hardwoods (2016), the Code of Practice for Wood Processing Facilities, and the Metrication Manual of the Guyana Forestry Commission, ensuring that officers are better prepared to support verification, enforcement, and the integrity of Guyana’s legal timber trade.
