The first batch of 13 persons graduated from the Occupational Health and Safety (OSH) and Timber Grading Training Programme, “Supporting the implementation of the Code of Practice for Wood Processing Facilities in Guyana through the capacity building to ensure local and international compliance.”
The five-day training, conducted from August 17 to 22, 2025, at the Yarrowkabra Training Centre, was implemented by the Forestry Training Centre Inc. with support from the FLEGT Secretariat and funding from the European Union (EU) through IICA Guyana.
The training strengthened the capacity of Timber Grading Inspectors and Forest Monitoring Officers to uphold Guyana’s timber quality standards and OHS best practices. Inspectors are now certified in Occupational Health and Safety and the Revised Timber Grading Rules (2016). As qualified professionals, they are equipped to support Forest Sector Operators across all regions, ensuring smooth implementation of the Code of Practice for Wood Processing Facilities. This effort directly supports the Guyana Forestry Commission’s goal of strengthening stakeholder confidence through capacity building and effective monitoring of licensed operators.
