The FLEGT Secretariat of the Guyana Forestry Commission, with EU-funded support from IICA Guyana, hosted a specialised Prosecutors Training Course for Forest Monitoring Officers, led by Teni Housty, Attorney-at-Law, Mediator, and Legal Consultant, on February 11–13, 2026.
The course was developed in recognition that strengthening forest law enforcement begins with strengthening people, particularly in the face of illegal logging and other forestry-related crimes that undermine sustainable forest management, climate resilience, and national revenue.
This three-day, face-to-face workshop was designed to equip officers with the legal and technical tools needed to:
– Identify and investigate forestry crimes
– Apply national legal frameworks effectively
– Conduct lawful detentions and seizures
– Build strong, evidence-based cases
– Prepare clear, defensible reports
– Participate in mock trials and practical case studies
Through expert-led sessions, group exercises, and experiential learning, participants strengthened their capacity to deter illegal activities and support compliance across the sector.
This training reflected a continued commitment to enhancing enforcement, accountability, and sustainable forest governance in Guyana.
